农历新年 [ A very Malacca Chinese New Year]

Spent Chinese New Year in my mother’s hometown, in Malacca. We stayed in my grandmother’s old fashioned bungalow, featuring nyonya furniture, stained marbled tables, and a verandah overlooking a field. When the breeze blows throughout the house, there is a good feeling. You can hear birds in the morning. Bunked with cousins in a room.

Yee Sang time. The higher you toss the dish, the more you invite prosperity. “Ong (luck)” mari (come)!

After the performance, the lion dancers handed me oranges on the way out (huat ah!!). I put both in my bag, but one burst open on the way home. 😦
